Mutton Busting

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Rodeo is inviting all young cowboys and cowgirls to saddle up for the always exciting Mutton Busting event, taking place on Saturday, October 4, 2025. We’re looking for 10 brave riders to take part in this crowd-favorite competition. Due to limited space and high interest, participants will be selected through a lottery system.

Applications open on Tuesday, September 8, at 8:00 a.m. and close on Tuesday, September 16, at 5:00 p.m. The drawing will take place at the Rodeo Queen Coronation Dinner on Thursday, October 2. The 10 selected participants will be announced on Friday, October 3, via social media and email confirmation for the 10 lucky winners. Please note that in order to enter your child in the event, you must have a valid Rodeo ticket—general admission or higher—at the time of entry. Be sure to check out our Family Ticket Package if you're planning to bring the whole crew.

Official Rules:

  • Weight limit: Children must weigh 60 pounds or less, fully clothed and wearing safety gear.

  • Safety first: All Riders will be provided with a helmet and safety vest.

  • Parental access: Parents are allowed in the holding area, but not behind the gate or chute. A dedicated viewing area will be available to watch your little rider in action.

  • Rodeo Admission Required for Entry to the Lottery: To enter your child in the event, you must have a Rodeo ticket (General Admission or higher) for all contestants.
